Abstract This study of patronage in Cappadocia concentrates on the area west of Caesarea, a rocky territory, where the peculiarities of the volcanic landscape necessitated the development of a distinctive residential setting. It includes the regions of Gülshehir, Zelve, Korama (Gö reme), Sinasos (Mustafapashaköy), Hagios Prokopios (Ürgüp), Matiane (Avcilar), Üçhisar, Tamisos (Damsa, Taskinpashaköy), as well as the regions of Ortaköy and Soandos (Soganli). In the southwest, evidence of patronage is found in the region of Koloneia (Aksaray), in the village Aciözü, and in the mountainous region of Argaios (Hasan Dagi), with several monuments on both sides of the Peristremma valley. The study also includes the region of Gökçe, Byzantine Momoasson. |
