Abstract

An attempt is made at a historical retrospective of the archaeological research in the Cappadocian region for our period of interest (6th – 13th centuries).

The most important scientific work from the beginning of the 18th century on is summed up, and especially noteworthy is the contribution of scholars such as Guillaume de Jerphanion, Nicole Thierry, Catherine Jolivet-Lévy, etc.

In addition, the problem regarding the chronology of the Cappadocian monuments is described and the general trends as well as the opposing viewpoints are set forth.
